“Travel brings power and love back into your life.” ― Rumi

Travelling has always been a fascination of mine. And travellers are unique individualities that I really am awed by and impressed with most of the times. Hearing their travel tales are much more exciting than strapped in an old sofa watching TV.

Wondermilk idea was borne out of the fascination of cafes around the world. The founders have done their bit in travelling and was inspired to bring the idea of such popular laid-back cafes in USA and Europe to Malaysia. They wanted the same unique atmospheric ambience where people chill out and hang out with their loved ones and friends, a second home outside home.

Mohd Ifzan Ibrahim is one of the founders of the popular brand- “Wondermilk”. Youthful as he looked, his story of entrepreneurship outweigh his age. His maturity and experiences that he has gone thru (alongside his gorgeous partners) really inspired WHQ team to be more determined in manifesting their dreams.

We asked- How did the name Wondermilk came about? Ifzan shrugged his shoulders and said that rationally, everyone needs milk for strong bones and that symbolised strong foundation. Furthermore, all their products are milk-based. Thus the name Wondermilk was created. Such simplicity,a wonder really.

And that can also be seen in their décor and overall concept. Most of them have Interior Graphic design background thus they used the café to unleash their own creativity in their own unique way. Sort of a time-out space. No wonder, the furnishing may looked like artisan handicrafts you might find in garage sales and weekend flea market, they were also beautifully arranged and matched with the whole café concept.

Simple earthly colours, pleasing to the eye and fun in everything they do. That’s what we felt as we entered the simple laid back café. We were in scurried hurried mode but when we entered the café, we felt very relaxed almost immediately. The staff were very friendly and full of sincere smiles. Very outgoing personalities.

There were animal motifs everywhere. We noticed that there was a play corner for kids. Cool, the kids can hang out too while the parents chill out together.

We love the fact that the café grew as the founders themselves grew. Because back then, they were youths going against the tides of being their own bosses when they can easily worked in an MNC company and earned 5 figure income. But they chose to work what they are passionate about and focus on that even though that was more insecure and filled with endless uncertainties. And now as one by one became parents, they then made their cafes suitable for young parents as they themselves face challenges in outside dining and socialising. Thus the café is designed for the comfort of a family in mind.

We were presented with such generous servings of myriad food. They do lots of research and development of recipes from cafes around the world and adjust them to suit the local taste buds.

They served us lovingly with Asian Grilled chicken Salad, Super Wedges with Cheesy Dip, Smores with Malaysian Cream Crackers, Ultimate Super Burger with Turkey Bacon, 4 mini cupcakes, some cold and ice blended drinks.

ICE-BLENDED RED VELVET

WHQ Lina confessed-“The food looked so good that I had to nibble gently on my fingers waiting in anticipation until WHQ Bryan, was done with his photography shots and gave me the thumbs up.

But I did accidentally slurped on the heavenly ice blended drink named Red Velvet even before the shot was taken. It was so good, I did not even realised I slurped it till it’s almost gone. Sorry. (with no regret *lol).”

Heavenly sinful drink. Warning: Very addictive.

CUPPACAKES TM

WHQ Lina continued-“Seriously I’m not a fan of cupcakes. I am thankful that Singaporeans love their cupcakes and always delivers them to me in bulks for tasting.(Syukran!) but I am not a fan of very sweet stuff. But for ice-cream that can be waived.

And so when they gave us the cupcakes, I nibbled it slowly and then fell in love almost immediately. OMG. I'm definitely chewing on to their slogan- Baked with LOVE. I can feel the LOVE in every bite. Soon, I was in my own world. The men were chatting about stuff, and my ears were tuning them out, singing my own lullaby, enjoying all 4 cupcakes, all to myself. *lol.

The 4 flavours were Foxy Red Velvet (white), Peanut Butter Brittle, Mint Chocolate, Salted Caramella. I love all 4 of them although I’m not a fan of mint and chocolate. Just like my dad, we both believed that mint should stay in the toothpaste or mouthwash. But I walloped them all.

What made the cupcakes so “shiok” was the moist and fluffy texture of the cupcakes. And they are not overwhelmingly sweet. The flavours are authentic. Not so extravagantly decorated unlike some cupcakes whose true taste were hidden beneath mountains of sugar and loads of “junk” to make them pretty. But these were perfect for us. Like home-baked, true goodness.

p.s: Psst…they do have some revealing, “provocative” designs on cupcakes. Only applicable for those aged 18 and above. Just whisper your needs to the counter… or email them discreetly *lol

WONDER WEDGES

The crispy potato wedges were nicely done. Creamy cheesy dip was good too. Felt like I’m eating Nachos cheese but with loads of carbo. Very filling. Great snack for watching soccer with friends.

ASIAN GRILLED CHICKEN SALAD

Where was the salad? I tend to push the greenies to the last part, which was not the right thing to do, if you wanna be healthy. Anyway, the salad was great. Fresh baby green, tender chicken meat, toasted almonds with mandarin orange slices, sesame seeds sprinkled in dashes of sesame dressing as well. Felt the taste was very oriental. Very interesting mixture, the bursting flavours of sweet, slight sourish tanginess plus saltish slight burnt sesame fragrance with a fresh crunchy bite and tender chicken met slices. Awesome, so refreshing.

ULTIMATE SUPER BURGER

Aww, one bite at this humongous burger, I no longer crave for the much hyped about “Burger bakar”. (Now you know why I did not queue up for the legendary Burger Bakar in KL) The patties are so purely beefy and grilled to perfection, enough to leave some juices in… the meat was marinated perfectly in between those soft buns. Fit for 2 people. But I can eat it whole if I’ve skipped 2 meals.

SMORES

Smores often used Graham Crackers but in this little twist, local cream crackers were used instead. When eating smores, the gentle etiquette of a lady had to be removed almost completely. I have to be a slob. And I don’t mind doing it, over and over again. Man, it was so good… the partially melted marshmallows doused in sinful chocolate syrups just fused so well in your mouth. All those sweet bitter chocolate and marshmallow chewiness plus cracker crispyness - Aahh... *A tune played in my head by Metallica: Nothing else matters.

For sure, you will make a mess. Remove that fearful attitude. Be free, eat like a slob in public. If I can do it, so can you. I was a mess. The men looked at me and laughed. It’s ok. It’s the sinful experiences that counts. I am salivating now as I am describing to you that particular tummy experience.

WONDERMILK BANANA & BUTTER SCOTCH (SEPARATELY)

Light, milky and tastefully done for each individual flavours. We both loved the robust Butterscotch flavour. Gotta taste it to believe it. We had them cold. YUM! You can get them hot or cold.

COLD BEVERAGES (BOTTLED)

These chilled bottled drinks have names like Kopi Beruang (Bear Coffee), Kopi Rusa (Deer Coffee) and many more. It’s very convenient somewhat like our canned Nescafe only these were much more down-to-earth and much healthier version and tastewise-splendid!

Wondermilk’s food are often catered for the good health consciousness people. But that does not mean the quality and taste are compromised. They used real butter instead of margarine (which some say like eating plastic), no trans fat in their food, no additives and preservatives.

Everything was made fresh even the cupcakes were made from scratch (We did snooped around their kitchen). They even have a cake in a jar whereby one can even bring it back home to Singapore (Yipee!).Fyi- it can last for 4-5 days in the jar. Fascinating.

They also do catering and events. They have their own event area just beside their café. https://www.facebook.com/ilovehellodeer

Currently they have 3 branches. This branch is nostalgic because it is where the magic of its origin begins..and its’ also their hometown.

Overall, it’s a mind blowing experience of taste, sight and hearing pleasures of food and exchanging tales of our entrepreneurship journeys together. Entrepreneur’s journey is said to be a lonely one. But not if you open up and share with others and learn from one another.
